What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that uses tooth-colored resin to enhance your smile. This treatment can repair chips, close gaps, and change the shape and color of your teeth. Unlike other cosmetic dental procedures, it’s completely reversible. 

What are the Steps of Dental Bonding?

Ready for a dental bonding treatment? Here’s what to expect: 

1. The resin is colored to match the natural color of your teeth.
2. We roughen the tooth’s surface to improve the strength of the bond. 
3. A conditioned liquid is applied to help the resin stick. 
4. Resin is applied, shaped, and molded to the desired shape. 
5. We cure the resin under a special light. 
6. All done! The tooth and resin are cleaned, polished, and ready to go. 

Advantages of Dental Bonding

Due to its versatile, temporal nature, dental bonding comes with a host of benefits: 

• It’s Fast. We can complete dental bonding in a single dental visit. The entire procedure will last roughly 30-60 minutes per tooth. 
• Safe and Secure. Dental bonding is a non-invasive, safe, standard, and effective procedure. Before each process, we’ll examine your teeth and review your dental history to pursue the most effective treatment path. 
• Many Uses. While cosmetic in nature, dental bonding has a wide range of orthodontic benefits. Dental bonding can fill gaps, repair minor cracks and chips, reshape teeth, cover stains, protect tooth roots, and enlarge the tooth. 
• Non-Invasive. It can be hard to move forward with irreversible treatment. Thankfully with dental bonding, this isn’t the case! We can easily undo any bonding. As a result, there are very few potential side effects and long-term risks. 

Disadvantages of Dental Bonding

While dental bonding may seem perfect, there are a few potential downsides to keep note of: 

• Easily Stainable. Dental bonds are susceptible to stains, unlike veneers and crowns- which are stain-resistant. Food such as coffee, red wine, tea, and tobacco may noticeably stain dental bonding. 
• Less Durable. While other cosmetic treatments are known for their durability and longevity, dental bonding is not. Dental bonding isn’t invasive, so it’s easier to apply and wear down. Our dental bonds should last 3-7 years with proper care and good dental habits. 
• Care Required. Due to their fragile nature, those with dental bonds need to be extra vigilant. Seemingly harmless acts, such as chewing on fingernails, ice, or pens, may break or chip the bonding.
